  • Garrido wins AAC Player of the Year

    Milligan College forward Roberto Fernandez Garrido has been voted the Appalachian Athletic Conference men’s soccer player of the year, announced the league office Friday morning. Garrido led the Buffs, the AAC and the NAIA in scoring this season with 25 goals in 17 matches.

    Senior Roberto Fernandez Garrido of the Milligan College men’s soccer team has been selected as the NAIA men’s soccer offensive player of the week for the week ending Oct. 27. The NAIA made the announcement Tuesday, selecting Garrido from a pool of over 15 nominees.

    Both the Milligan women’s soccer team and the Milligan men’s soccer team finished their regular season schedule this past week, and picked up two Appalachian Athletic Conference weekly honors for the women and one for the men for the week ending Oct. 27.

    Roberto Fernandez Garrido and the Milligan College men’s soccer team played a resilient start to the second half but in the end lost to Bryan College, 6-2, Saturday on Anglin Field. Trailing 3-0 at the break, Milligan cut it to 3-2 early in the second half before surrendering three more goals by the end of the match.

    The Milligan College men’s soccer program will host a winter ID camp on Anglin Field Saturday, Feb. 8. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to boys ages 14-18.

    The month of October continued to be all wins for the Milligan College men’s soccer team, as the Buffaloes defeated Bluefield College 5-0 Saturday night on Anglin Field. Five Buffs found the back of the net in the team’s third straight win and second straight clean sheet.

    The Milligan College men’s soccer team lost another close Appalachian Athletic Conference match Saturday on the road. Inaki Moreno scored an equalizer midway through the first half, but Montreat came out on top, 4-1, thanks to three goals in the final 17 minutes.

    Robell Habte scored a go-ahead goal in the first half and Roberto Fernandez Garrido scored an equalizer in the second half, but the Milligan College men’s soccer team suffered another double overtime loss Wednesday on Anglin Field. Visiting Truett McConnell University scored a golden goal with 4:36 remaining in the second overtime period to send Milligan to a 3-2 loss, its second such defeat in the last three games.

    After defeating last year’s league champion on the road earlier this season, the Milligan College men’s soccer team was unable to defeat last year’s tournament champion on the road Saturday, falling to Reinhardt University 3-1.

    Teams were moments away from shaking hands for a draw, but Union College broke the deadlock with a golden goal with 90 seconds left in the second overtime period to send the Milligan College men’s soccer team to a 2-1 loss at Anglin Field Wednesday.

    The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced Monday that 12 Milligan teams earned the distinction for Scholar-Teams for the 2018-19 academic year. These 12 teams were among 1,939 total teams across the NAIA recognized with this award.
