MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 5, 2019) – Roberto Fernandez Garrido scored twice to bookend a match-winning goal from Harry Griffin, and the Milligan College men's soccer team stunned No. 19 Tennessee Wesleyan University, 3-1, Saturday night on Anglin Field.
The win snapped an 11-game undefeated streak for the visiting Bulldogs and marked only the second time this season a team scored three goals against Wesleyan.
Garrido scored his Appalachian Athletic Conference-leading 14th goal of the season along with his fourth multigoal match of the season. His first goal happened early, on a penalty kick following a handball in the box, putting the Buffs on top 1-0 in the 15th minute. After Tennessee Wesleyan tied the game 1-1 in the 34th minute, Andre Levarity connected with Griffin for the go-ahead goal, then Griffin connected with Garrido for the put-away goal, both in the second half.
Griffin scored his goal from the top of the penalty area following a corner kick by Inaki Moreno. Milligan made a few close-range passes before Griffin struck one into the right side, past a diving stop attempt by Wesleyan goalkeeper Nick Croucher.
Just over five minutes later, Griffin fed Garrido along the end line before Garrido buried it into the back of the net to round out the scoring at 3-1.
Milligan outshot Tennessee Wesleyan 13-12, including 6-3 on shots on goal. Milligan goalkeeper Jan Kuepper made two saves.
Up next, Milligan stays home for its next two matches, first facing St. Andrews University Wednesday at 3 p.m. The women's match will follow at 6 p.m. After that, the Buffs host Bluefield College Saturday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m. (women) and 5 p.m. (men).
