Men’s soccer earns third straight win

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 12, 2019) – The month of October continued to be all wins for the Milligan College men's soccer team, as the Buffaloes defeated Bluefield College 5-0 Saturday night on Anglin Field. Five Buffs found the back of the net in the team's third straight win and second straight clean sheet.

Goal scorers

Axel Jansson got the scoring going in just the 11th minute with a launched shot from the right side from distance. It went off the outstretched hands of Bluefield goalkeeper Keegan Brade and into the corner of the netting to make it 1-0.

Harry Griffin and Inaki Moreno followed 13 minutes later, both scoring in a span of less than a minute and a half to send Milligan into the halftime break up 3-0. Joel Dominguez earned the assist off a corner kick on Griffin's goal before Roberto Fernandez Garrido earned the assist on a nice pass inside the penalty area on Moreno's goal.

Garrido then scored one of his own via a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Garrido was poised to score on a breakaway chance but was dragged down from behind inside the penalty area to earn the free chance. The goal marked Garrido's Appalachian Athletic Conference-leading 18th goal of the season.

Milligan padded the lead one more time in the 82nd minute when Garrett Wertz delivered a great pass to Robell Habte inside the penalty area. Habte scored his second goal of the season from close range.

Match totals

As the score indicated, Milligan dominated the match and had nearly all of the scoring chances. The Buffs outshot the visiting Rams 33-6, including 20-3 on shots on goal. Milligan goalkeeper Jan Kuepper made three saves, including a stellar one on a direct free kick late in the game to preserve the shutout.

With the win, Milligan moved to 5-7 (4-4 AAC) and into sixth place in the league, four points out of fourth place and seven points off league frontrunner Tennessee Wesleyan. Milligan started its three-game win against then-No. 19 Tennessee Wesleyan.

Up next

Milligan hits the road for the next three games, first heading to Columbia, South Carolina, for an AAC match at Columbia International University on Wednesday. The Buffs return home for senior day and their last home match Saturday, Oct. 26, as part of homecoming weekend.
