    Sophomores Avery DeWolf and Bekah Owen were the first two of four Buffs to finish in the top 100 as the Milligan College women’s cross country team ran to an eighth-place finish at the 2019 NAIA Women’s Cross Country National Championship Friday at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

    Both the Milligan College women’s and men’s cross-country teams kept a high national ranking according to the latest NAIA coaches top 25 poll. The women remained in the top 10 for the seventh consecutive week, polling in at No. 7. The men landed this week at No. 13, marking 47 straight weeks inside the top 20.

After a successful weekend which saw both the women and men finish runner-up in a large field loaded with tough competition, Milligan’s women moved to No. 6 while Milligan’s men moved to No. 12 according to the latest NAIA coaches top 25 poll.

    Gabrielle Mardis and Nathan Baker, finishing fourth and ninth respectively in their races, led their team to an Appalachian Athletic Conference level win and runner-up finish in their meet heavy with NCAA Divisions I and II teams last week. Each running one of the fastest race times in Milligan history, Mardis and Baker were both recognized as AAC runner of the week for their stellar performance this past Friday at the Queen City Invitational.

    Sophomore Gabrielle Mardis led the No. 9 Milligan College women’s cross-country team to a runner-up finish in a deep field heavy with NCAA Division I and Division II competition Friday evening at the Queen City Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park. Mardis ran to a fourth-place finish individually with a 5k time of 18:16.

    Undefeated seasons so far for both Milligan College cross country teams have helped the Buffaloes continue to receive national attention according to the latest NAIA coaches top 25 polls, released Thursday. The women moved up eight spots into the top 10 at No. 9 while the men rank No. 16.

    Both the No. 15 men and No. 17 women of the Milligan College cross country program ran an excellent race in the college’s first event on campus in its 20-year history. In a dual meet against Appalachian Athletic Conference member Tennessee Wesleyan, Milligan ran away with the victory on both sides.
  • Buffs host historic home event Friday

    For the first time in its 20-year history, Milligan College cross-country will host a race on campus. The meet, Dual at Buffalo Creek, will pit the Buffaloes against the Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan University. Action starts Friday at 6 p.m. with the women’s race followed by the men’s race at 6:30 p.m.

    After leading their respective nationally ranked squads to victory in the first race of the season, Milligan College’s Hannah Bell and Jake Crow have been named Appalachian Athletic Conference runners of the week. The announcement was made Monday for the week ending Sept. 8.

    All five competing Buffs finished in the top eight, and the No. 17 Milligan College women’s cross country team opened the season with an emphatic win at the Zaxby’s Open, hosted by Tusculum University, Friday night. Seniors Hannah Bell and Erica Stone led the way with the individual runner-up and third-place finish, respectively.

    The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced Monday that 12 Milligan teams earned the distinction for Scholar-Teams for the 2018-19 academic year. These 12 teams were among 1,939 total teams across the NAIA recognized with this award.
