Buffs contain Cobras in AAC quarterfinals

Johnson City, Tenn. (November 6, 2010) --- In their first game of the AAC men's soccer tournament, the No. 4 seeded Milligan College Buffs defeated No. 5 Virginia Intermont College 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Science Hill's Kermit Tipton Stadium to claim a spot in the semifinals.

The Buffs struck first with a headed goal from Sandre Wilson (Mandeville, Jamaica) on a corner kick from Nahom Tekle (Ethiopia) in the 12th minute, putting Milligan up 1-0. Switching roles, Wilson assisted Tekle in the Buffs' next goal in the 38th minute, increasing their lead to 2-0. In the closing minutes of the half, Alexander Haun (Knoxville, Tenn.) made a diving stop on a shot from a breakaway Virginia Intermont forward to preserve the first half shutout. It would be Haun's lone save of the game.

The Buffs were unable to score again in the second half, but strong defensive efforts by defenders Andrew Stewart (Newcastle, England) and Daniel Fuller (Plainfield, Ind.) prevented the Cobras from putting a shot on goal.

“At this point in the year, it's all about results,” Head Coach Adam Laney said. “We did what we needed to do today, and now we have to focus on beating a very good Bryan team. Bryan is a very fast-paced team from a work ethic standpoint, but if we have to find a way to match that, we should be able to cause them some problems.”

Milligan returns to action in the AAC semifinals against No. 1 Bryan on Friday, Nov. 12. The closing rounds of the tournament will be held in Dayton, Tenn. Game times will be announced at the start of next week.
