Greeneville, Tenn. (Feb. 20, 2010) --- The Milligan College men's and women's tennis teams faced off against NCAA Division II Tusculum College Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The Pioneers prevailed 0-9 in both the women's and men's matches.
The Lady Buffs played the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches close, as
Caitlin Conley (Bristol, Tenn.) and
Jessie Rose Remegi (Hilton Head, S.C.) fell by the final of 8-5. In the No. 2 matches,
Albany Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and newcomer
Celeste Carpenter (Mountain City, Tenn.) forced the extra set, but fell eventually 9-7.
“The women faced another strong Division II team today,” commented Head Coach
Ron Worrell. “We played better in some matches but our focus just was not there across the board.”
On the men's side, the No. 2 doubles team of newcomer
Kody Horne (Summertown, Tenn.) and
Wesley Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.) played the Pioneers' Oliver Smith and Steven Lin close before dropping the match 8-4. Horne, playing in his first match as a Buffalo, had to withdraw in his singles match due to a back injury.
“The men had a rough first spring outing, but it was good to compete against such a tough Division II squad,” added Worrell.
On the year, the Buffs are 0-3, while the women are 2-2.
The Milligan women will host Sneed State Community College on Feb. 26, at 2:30 p.m. The men's team travels to Mars Hill College on Feb. 28, for their next match which is set for 1:30 p.m.
