Women's tennis wins over Mars Hill

Milligan College, Tenn. (March 24, 2010) --- The Milligan College women's tennis team notched a win against NCAA Div. II Mars Hill College 5-4 on Wednesday while the men's tennis team fell to the Lions 0-9.

The Lady Buffs took the second and third matches in doubles play and took the fourth through sixth singles matches on their way to winning over the Lady Lions. Albany Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Sarah Carpenter (Mountain City, Tenn.) won Milligan's first match of the day in the number two doubles seed while the pair of Heather Bell (Franklin, N.C.) and Janie Mullins (Greenville, Ala.) helped the Lady Buffs to an early 2-1 lead over Mars Hill. Halie Winfrey (Fayetteville, Ga.), Bell and Carpenter went on to win their doubles matches also.

Carpenter was Milligan's hinge. The Lady Buffs and the Lady Lions were locked in a 4-4 tie, and Carpenter was the only Lady Buff yet to finish her singles match. She would prove to be the tie breaker. She lost the first set, but battled back in the second and third sets to claim the victory for the Lady Buffs.

Senior Bryan Upshaw (Kingsport, Tenn.) had a close match against Mars Hill's Bradley Bassinger. Upshaw played a tough match but lost in the final set of his singles match.

Both tennis teams will take to the courts again Saturday, March 27, at noon. The Buffs and Lady Buffs are set to defend their home courts against AAC opponent UVA-Wise.
