Milligan College, Tenn. (April 10, 2010) --- The Milligan College men's and women's tennis squads split against AAC foe Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Mathes Tennis Center with the women winning 5-4, while the men lost 0-9.
On the women's side, it was close throughout the afternoon with number one doubles team of
Caitlin Conley (Bristol, Tenn.) and
Albany Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) started off the day with a win over Kayla Foster and Meghan Whaley, 8-6. The number three doubles team of
Heather Bell (Franklin, N.C.) and
Janie Mullins (Greenville, Ala.) breezed by Marissa Morris and Spencer Creekmore, 8-2.
In singles play, Mullins had another great performance as she defeated Creekmore, 6-0, 6-0.
Halie Winfrey (Fayetteville, Ga.) also won as she beat Allie Smith, 6-1, 6-0. Celeste Carpenter rounded out the afternoon with a win as well as she beat Morris, 6-3, 6-4.
On the men's side, in doubles action, the number two doubles team of
Kody Horne (Summertown, Tenn.) and
Bryan Upshaw (Kingsport, Tenn.) had the closest match as they eventually fell 8-2.
In singles play,
Wesley Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.) played a hard fought match but eventually fell to Cody Gaby, 6-4, 6-2. Upshaw also fought hard but eventually lost to Eric Chastain 6-1, 6-3.
With the loss, Milligan's men fall to 3-2 in the AAC and 3-8 overall, while the Lady Buffs stay perfect in the AAC improving to 5-0 and 8-4 overall.
Both teams will return to action next Saturday when they host AAC foe Union College. The action is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
