Milligan College, Tenn. (April 17, 2010) --- The Milligan College women's tennis team set out the beginning of the year with the hopes of an AAC regular season crown and Saturday afternoon on the Mathes Tennis Center they achieved that goal blemish free with a rout of the Union (Ky.) College women 8-1. ÂÂ
Heading into Saturday's match, the Lady Buffs were at the 5-0 mark in the league and had done all but clinched the title as they had a one match lead over the Lady Scots of Covenant (Ga.) College. The Milligan women came out firing as they swept the doubles matches and won all but one of the singles en route to the AAC title. ÂÂ
Milligan's
Jessie Rose Remegi (Hilton Head, S.C.) and
Janie Mullins (Greenville, Ala.) both posted 6-0, 6-0, wins in the No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Heather Bell (Franklin, N.C.) also won the pro set 8-0 in the No. 6 singles over Union's Elizabeth Earick.ÂÂ
“It's just a great feeling for me as a coach and them as a team to go undefeated in the conference,” commented Head Coach
Ron Worrell. “Heading into the tournament next week, we know we have to play our best and if we do we feel we have a good shot at the tournament title as well.”ÂÂ
For the season, the Lady Buffs improve to 9-4 overall and a league best 6-0
On the men's side, the Buffs struggled against 12th ranked Union, as the Bulldogs went on to take the match 9-0. ÂÂ
The closest match for the Buffs on the day came from sophomore
Matt Clark (Kingsport, Tenn.) who battled Union's Kyle Shilling 7-5 and 7-5. Sophomore
Wesley Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.) also hung tough against Pierre Vernin losing in two straight sets 6-4 and 6-1. ÂÂ
The Milligan men slip to 3-10 overall and slide into fourth place in the AAC with a mark of 3-3. ÂÂ
Both the Milligan men and women host NJCAA USC-Lancaster Sunday, April 18, as they close out their regular season. The matches are set to begin at 1 p.m., with senior day honors to precede the action.ÂÂ
