Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Grant, Matekenya, Kaseke propel Buffs past Montreat

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 8, 2014) â€" Early goals from Anthony Matekenya and Tapiwa Kaseke and a match-winner in the 82nd minute by Lewis Grant was enough for the Milligan College men's soccer team to defeat Montreat College in Appalachian Athletic Conference action Wednesday night on a rain-soaked Anglin field.

With the win, Milligan snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 4-5-2 (2-3 AAC) while continuing its streak of games decided by no more than one goal to 10 games. Montreat fell to 4-7 (0-4 AAC).

"The field was very heavy and took a lot out of us," Head Coach Adam Laney said. "It is nice to get a result even when we aren't firing on all cylinders."

Grant, who scored his first goal of the season and third of his career, helped Milligan overcome a 2-1 second-half deficit when he put away a Ryan Reilly crossing pass from close range. It was the 19th of 21 shots the Buffaloes took in the contest, compared to 14 taken by the visiting Cavaliers.

Grant's match-winning goal was made possible in part by Matekenya, who scored his first goal of the season in just the third minute of play. He scored it on a shot taken from the left side a few yards outside of the penalty area.

After Montreat's Esgarda Arroya equalized in the 14th minute and gave the Cavs the lead, 2-1, in the 51st, a gorgeous cross from Grant found Kaseke at the near post for a chance to tie. Kaseke needed only one touch to level the match at 2-2.

Grant gave Milligan the lead and eventual win a grueling 30 minutes later.

Milligan outshot Montreat 21-14 in the victory, including 12-5 in the second half. Montreat had the advantage in shots on frame at 9-8. Dan Ball, who was sidelined for roughly 25 minutes after suffering a collision partway through the first half, played all 45 minutes of the second half and finished the game with five saves. Nick Smith made two saves while keeping the Cavs scoreless in Ball's absence.

For Montreat, goalkeeper Brandon Sagon matched Ball with five saves. The Cavaliers were led offensively by Arroya who took four shots, all on frame. Arroya managed his first goal after coming up with a wide open shot roughly 20 yards out from the left side, sliding it beneath the diving reach of Ball in the 14th minute. Less than six minutes into the second half, he stumbled into his second goal, finding the back of the net on a shot that deflected off the Milligan defense.

Milligan will have Saturday off but returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 15 for an AAC matchup with Point University (2-6-1, 0-3 AAC) in West Point, Georgia. The Buffaloes will be back home on Oct. 18 for Reinhardt University.
