Late goal dooms Buffs in loss to St. Andrews

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 17, 2014) â€" Jesse Ramoya scored his third goal of the season to give the Milligan College men's soccer team life early in the second half, but St. Andrews University had the answer with less than five minutes left in regulation to hand the Buffaloes a tough-luck 2-1 loss Wednesday night.

Playing in its home and Appalachian Athletic Conference opener, Milligan (2-1-2, 0-1 AAC) was defeated for the first time this season. The Buffaloes also were held to less than two goals for the first time in the 2014 season. St. Andrews improved to 3-1 (1-1 AAC).

Ramoya's goal, which he scored on a lofted shot over the keeper and off the near post, was assisted by Anthony Matekenya in the 53rd minute on a ball Matekenya played over the top of the St. Andrews' defense. It tied the game at 1-1 and helped the Buffaloes erase a first half in which they were outshot 7-4 and struggled to find chances to score.

Milligan finished with 10 shots, tying St. Andrews with six apiece in the second half. Three of the 10 shots came from the foot of Ramoya.

St. Andrews struck first, in the 16th minute, when Caio Liberatti played a ball down the left side which found Preston Rolle for the early lead. After Ramoya's equalizer early in the second half, the Knights retook the lead in the 86th minute when Brendan Duncan sent a crossing pass to the far post, finding Hector Rivas who finished with a header for the game-winner.

Milligan earned several opportunities to take its own lead throughout the second half, including a Lucas Maia free kick in the 71st minute from the top of the 18 that sailed just high. Then after Rivas scored to give St. Andrews the lead, Milligan managed two final shots and earned one last free kick with seven seconds left but could not find another answer.

Milligan will be on the road Saturday, Sept. 20 for Truett-McConnell College before returning home for Tusculum College on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
