MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 9, 2015) â€" With 19 seconds left in the final overtime period,
Ryan Reilly scored his second goal of the day to help a resilient Milligan College men's soccer team overcome a four-goal, second-half deficit and defeat Point University 6-5 Friday afternoon at Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
Milligan (3-9-1, 2-2-1 AAC) used a scoring frenzy of four goals in a span of eight and a half minutes early in the second half to erase a 5-1 deficit, then Reilly provided the match winner after dribbling through the Point defense late into the 110th minute of action. The Buffs scored the last five goals of the match and outscored the Skyhawks (4-7-1, 1-5 AAC) 6-1 over the last 75 minutes.
ÂÂ
Reilly, who also accounted for the goal that started Milligan's scoring frenzy, was one of three Buffs with multiple scores (52', 110') as
Jesse Ramoya (36', 58') and
Jonathan Colson (54', 60') also found the back of the net twice.
ÂÂ
Until Reilly scored the winner, Colson's second goal was the biggest of the match. With the Buffs riding a wave of momentum after dominating the possession in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Colson came up with a loose ball near the penalty spot and handled it like he would a penalty kick, blasting it by Point goalkeeper Jimmy Franklin to make it 5-5.
ÂÂ
Colson was a key part of the Buffs preceding goal less than two minutes earlier when he fed a great pass through the Point defense to find Ramoya open for a breakaway. Ramoya made the opportunity count by firing it into the near corner to make it 5-4.
ÂÂ
Milligan outshot the Skyhawks 36-23 and had 19 shots on goal compared to 14 at the other end. The shot count was 18-5 in favor of the Buffs in the second half and 24-10 including the overtimes.
ÂÂ
Whereas Reilly and the Buffs took advantage of the second overtime, Point looked to come away victorious in the first, jumping into the extra time with the same urgency that possessed the Buffs early in the second half. Milligan keeper
Brandon May was required to make two saves in the first four minutes, the second one looking labeled for the side netting at the far post until May made a diving catch for one of his five saves.
ÂÂ
May made another fine stop in the final minute of the first overtime when he thwarted a breakaway chance by Point's Roberto Carizzosa.
ÂÂ
May came into the game for the second half after starting keeper
Nick Smith made four saves through the first 45 minutes. During that time, the Skyhawks seemed to be scoring in the most creative ways. Their first goal came following a throw-in in the 11th minute; their second on a low shot from the right side in the 21st minute; their third on a one-timer in the box after a nice through ball; their fourth after a corner kick; and their fifth on an open attempt at the top of the penalty area.
ÂÂ
In the midst of it all, Smith's four saves included one that he redirected over the crossbar in the 26th minute and another similar one that he punched to the side in the 30th.
ÂÂ
Milligan's first goal made the score 4-1 and came off the head of Ramoya in the 36th minute. Following a throw-in by
Chance Simmons,
Tayzere Arnott played the ball back to Simmons who sent his crossing pass to the far post where Ramoya scored for the first time this season. Less than 25 minutes later, Ramoya would help the Buffs claw back with his second goal.
ÂÂ
Milligan will be back home on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for another AAC matchup, facing Bluefield College at 5 p.m. The Milligan women are scheduled to follow at 7 p.m.
