Men's soccer falls to West Virginia Tech in nonconference tilt

BECKLEY, W.Va. (Sept. 22, 2015) â€" The Milligan College men's soccer team took a break from Appalachian Athletic Conference action to face undefeated West Virginia Tech, and fell to the Golden Bears 4-1 Tuesday night at the Paul Cline Memorial Complex.

With their second consecutive loss, the Buffaloes record fell to 2-7 overall, while West Virginia Tech's rose to 5-0 as the Golden Bears have yet to allow more than one goal in any match and have yet to score less than two.

Andrew Grimes scored his first goal of the season for the Buffs on what was only his fourth shot of the year, Anthony Walker, Ryan Reilly and Tapiwa Kaseke each added two shots, and Nick Smith made seven saves.

The first 45 minutes of the match were controlled by the Golden Bears as they outshot the Buffs 13-4, including 6-3 on shots on goal, and had five corner kick opportunities to none by the Buffs. After a shot by Colson at the 11:21 mark, West Virginia Tech fired the next seven shots before the Buffs got their second at the 33:25 mark by Tyrus Garrett, which was his first of the year.

The Golden Bears got the scoring started when three shots and two corner kicks in less than 45 seconds led to a goal by Saul Montealegre 14 minutes into the match. West Virginia Tech struck again in the half on a goal by Matias Gandulfo at the 37:17 mark.

The Buffs however, refused to go into the locker room down by two and answered with Grime's goal, which was assisted by Zana Ali, with just over two minutes left in the half.

West Virginia Tech started the second half with a goal less than five minutes in as Francisco Neto scored off of a free kick. The Golden Bears added a final tally near the end of the match as Drew Lytton scored off of another free kick at the 87:30 mark.

In the second half, Milligan had a few more chances to score than in the first thanks to firing six shots, five of which were on goal, and taking four corner kick opportunities to only one by the Golden Bears. Ali and Kaseke each had shots that challenged the keeper, while Walker had two on goal in the half, but the Buffs were unable to cash in.

The Buffs will now begin a three-match home stand against AAC opponents beginning Saturday, Sept. 26, with Tennessee Wesleyan College, and the other two matches against Truett-McConnell College and Point University on Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 3, of next week.
