Men's soccer tops Concordia 2-1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Sept. 4, 2016) â€" Junior Josh Willard scored the winning goal in the Milligan College men's soccer team's first win of the season as the Buffaloes defeated Concordia University 2-1 Sunday afternoon on the campus of Faulkner University.

Milligan improved to 1-2 and will have a quick turnaround to play Faulkner on Monday at 1 p.m.

Willard's goal, his first of the season and second of his Milligan career, came in the closing minutes of the second half of a 1-1 game. Milligan had taken the lead midway through the first half on an own goal from Concordia, then the Buffs surrendered a tying goal midway through the second half. Willard's answer to that came closely after Concordia had equalized.

Freshman Joel Dominguez had the assist on Willard's goal, and Willard finished with a nice curling shot from approximately 18 yards out, bending it around the keeper and into the back of the net.

"This was a great team effort and a great win," Head Coach Adam Laney said. "We played 17 guys and 17 guys contributed. It's nice to have that kind of depth, to be able to play that many guys and come away with a win."

Goalkeeper Nick Smith was one of the keys down the stretch, making several saves in the closing minutes to help keep the Buffs' one-goal lead. Smith finished with six saves.

After Milligan faces Faulkner on Monday, the Buffs will be on the road again on Friday, Sept. 9, for a 7:30 p.m. match at University of the Cumberlands. Milligan will next be home on Wednesday, Sept. 21, for its Appalachian Athletic Conference opener against Union.
