MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 7, 2017) â€" A penalty kick early in the game and a consolation goal late in the game sent the Milligan College men's soccer team to a 2-0 loss to Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Point University Saturday afternoon on Anglin Field.
ÂÂ
Point got on the board in the ninth minute when a foul in the penalty area put Koen Vos on the penalty spot and allowed the Skyhawks to go ahead 1-0. The game was relatively even from there, with Milligan leading the shot total 20-12 and also having an advantage in corner kicks at 4-3.
ÂÂ
In the closing minutes, Point doubled the lead and put the game out of reach when a costly turnover on Milligan's back line gave Juan Gomez a breakaway opportunity, and Gomez made it count.
ÂÂ
Milligan had plenty of chances prior to Gomez's goal but could not capitalize. In the first half, with the score 1-0, senior
Jack Allan had a chance from the left side that required a good save by Point goalkeeper Jacob Price. Less than six minutes later, sophomore
Joel Dominguez had a similar chance from the other side of the field, a header that required a similar save.
ÂÂ
Allan and Dominguez each had another close opportunity to tie the game in the second half. Allan's came following a
Jesse Ramoya service into the box which found Allan for a header near the penalty spot, but Allan's header went high. Dominguez had his chance on a free kick with just over 12 minutes left but missed wide.
ÂÂ
Similarly, freshman
Junior Nyamunda took a free kick in the 79th minute, only a few seconds later, but Price was there for one of his seven saves.
ÂÂ
Milligan senior goalkeeper
Nick Smith had another great game, finishing with four saves.
ÂÂ
Milligan will be back home on Tuesday for another AAC match against Bryan College at 7 p.m.
