DAYTON, Tenn. (Nov. 3, 2017) â€" Senior goalkeeper
Nick Smith broke the Milligan College record for career saves, but the Milligan men's soccer team saw its season end in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals on Friday night. Milligan had the lead in the second half but lost to Bryan College, 3-1, to finish the season.
ÂÂ
Smith was three shy of the record coming into the game and recorded his record breaking save early in the second half. Milligan was up 1-0 at that point, as an own goal by Bryan opened up the scoring in the 20th minute. Smith finished the game with six saves to finish his career with 267 total. He bumped Bryan Newbold's mark of 264 career saves down to second all-time.
ÂÂ
The score stayed 1-0 in favor of Milligan until midway through the second half when Bryan posted back-to-back goals to tie the game and take the lead in a span of just over three minutes. The Lions then added one more for consolation in the 84th minute.
ÂÂ
Milligan had upset Point University with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win earlier this week as
Leonardo Guiaro booted in a golden goal in the first overtime period to advance the Buffs into the quarterfinals. Friday night, the Buffs faced a Bryan team that had handed them a 4-1 loss back on Oct. 11 and looked to be in line to shock the second-seeded Lions with the early lead. Bryan, which is receiving votes in the latest NAIA coaches top 25 poll, rallied back for the win.
ÂÂ
With the loss, Milligan ended the season with a record of 3-16-1 but was victorious in two of the last three matches.
