BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – On Wednesday evening the Milligan University men's soccer team traveled to North Carolina for an Apalachain Athletic Conference (AAC) match against the Cavaliers of Montreat. After overwhelming the Cavaliers early in the game, the Buffs held the lead late in the game to win by a final score of 3-1. With the win Milligan moves to 8-3-1 overall and 7-2-0 in AAC play.
The Buffs controlled the first half with an impressive offensive attack, as less than ten minutes into the game a cross into the box from Milligan was deflected by a Montreat defender which then landed on the right foot of
Kerim Akpinar who knocked in a goal. Milligan continued applying pressure throughout the rest of the period but were unable to extend the lead and went into the second half ahead 1-0. The Buffs maintained control of the ball in their attacking half for the majority of the half resulting in a 6-1 advantage in the shot department and a 4-1 lead in shots on goal.
Milligan carried the momentum into the second half, as just over five minutes into the stanza it was Akpinar finding
Emir Basar on a breakaway to send a shot past the Montreat goalie to extend the Buffs lead to 2-0. In the 59th minute, the Cavaliers responded with a goal to cut into the deficit. Nearing the end of the game, in the 82nd minute, Akpinar got his second tally on a tap-in goal assisted by
Marco Lattanzi to put the game out of reach. Despite late pressure from the Cavaliers, the Buffs held on to secure a 3-1 victory.
Overall, Milligan took 18 shots in the battle with nine of those shots being on goal. Akpinar led the attack for the Buffs, scoring two goals in the contest and assisting on the third goal scored by Basar. Akpinar finished the match with five total shots on goal,
Johnny Salgado and
Emir Basar also added two shots on frame.
Transfer sophomore
Florian Quast played well in his first game between the pipes for the Buffaloes, and his record is now 1-0 on the season.
