MILLIGAN, Tenn. – The (RV) Milligan University men's soccer's team kicked off Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Anglin Field against the Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist College. After a scoreless opening 81 minutes, the Buffaloes
broke the tie with back-to-back goals to secure a 2-0 victory over the newcomers to the AAC.
Half number one was a period in which the Buffs had a number of great opportunities to score but could not get one past the Pioneers' goalie. Milligan totaled four shots on goal and 10 total in the period.
The second half saw the Buffs maintain the heavy majority of the shot attempts, as they took a total of twenty attempts in the second half alone. It was in the 81st minute when the barrage of attempts finally wore down the SMC keeper. Following a blocked shot from
Johnny Salgado,
Kerim Akpinar found himself one on one with the goalie and sent a shot through the box that could not be stopped, giving Milligan a 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later,
Justin Madejski found
Myles Diel in the left corner of the box and he blasted home another goal off the goal post to extend the lead to 2-0. With only four minutes left in the match, and not being able to get anything going offensively Spartanburg Methodist attempted to push the pace, but their late game effort was not enough, and the Buffs picked up the win to start conference play.
Adria Alles faced four shots on the net on the day, and he was able to save all four and earn himself his second win and shutout of the season.
Milligan will be in action for another AAC bout on Wednesday, Sept. 10, facing Tennessee Wesleyan at 5 p.m. on Anglin Field.
