Milligan Flag Football Stays Perfect With Senior Night Victory Over King

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. – On Tuesday, the No. 9 Milligan University flag football program hosted the King University Tornado at Citizens Bank Stadium, as the Lady Buffs honored their seniors. The Buffs' perfect record was on the line as they looked to add another win to the books. In the end, Milligan held King scoreless while putting up 62 points, capturing a 62-0 win on senior night.

After exchanging punts to start the contest, Milligan struck first on the third drive of the game to take the lead that would not be relinquished for the remainder of the game. Following a punt return from Caitlin Quinn that set MU up in King territory at the 29-yard line, a 19-yard pass from Bridget Keyser to Caitlin Quinn set up the Buffs at the goal line. Ashton Whealrey capitalized in the red zone with a touchdown grab, and a two-point conversion put Milligan ahead 8-0 in the early stages of the game.

On the ensuing King drive, the Tornado were forced to punt, and Milligan marched down the field for their second score of the day. Jasmine McDowell and Keyser had short rushes and Lilly Rumrill made a catch over the middle, before Keyser found Krista Quinn for a 23-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown put the Buffs ahead 14-0, and Keyser was able to sneak the ball in on the one-point conversion, extending the advantage to 15-0 at the beginning of the second quarter.

Milligan continued the momentum in the second quarter and broke away from King with three additional touchdowns. The first score came after Milligan forced a turnover on downs when Parker Bridges came up with a stop on fourth down, and Keyser quickly found Rumrill streaking down the sideline for a 30-yard touchdown. Next, Bridges came away with an interception, and a 36-yard return set up K. Quinn for her second touchdown of the game on a 24-yard reception. The third score was also courtesy of K. Quinn, who scored on a 17-yard reception after her sister C. Quinn took the ball away from the Tornado on an interception. Milligan converted on two one-point conversions following the first two touchdowns, but failed on the third, making the score 35-0 going into halftime.

King received the ball to start the third quarter, but turned the ball over after failing to convert on fourth down. Then, a five-play, 35-yard drive was capped off by a Rumrill 19-yard touchdown, expanding the Buff advantage to 42-0.

It was Abbylin LaPrise who returned possession to Milligan after an interception on the ensuing King drive. LaPrise jumped the passing lane on a short throw where King was trying to move the ball out of their own territory, resulting in an interception that set Milligan up at the King five-yard line. It took Keyser just one play to find Sam Urso open in the end zone to extend the Buffs' lead to 48-0, and a successful point-after attempt made it 49-0 at the 6:18 mark of the third quarter.

Neither side was able to score again in the third quarter, as the two final scores from Milligan came in the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Whealrey broke off a 35-yard dash for a touchdown, and also ran the ball across the goal line on the one-point conversion to score seven points herself and put Milligan ahead 56-0 at the 6:32 mark. The final touchdown of the game came after LaPrise came away with another interception, and C. Quinn capped the game with an 11-yard touchdown reception from Whealrey.

Keyser dominated through the air, completing 17 of 29 passes for 215 yards and seven touchdowns, but she did throw one interception. Whearley also made the most of her day at quarterback, completing four of five pass attempts for 38 yards and a touchdown.

The Milligan receiving game was led by senior Caitlin Quinn, who hauled in four catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. Krista Quinn caught the ball five times for 73 yards and three touchdowns, and Rumrill had three catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Whealrey had two receptions for 15 yards and a touchdown, and Urso added two catches for nine yards and a score. LaPrise, Jeylise Padilla, Dani Shropshire, Annnabelle Rhodes and Ashley Wilson each had one reception apiece.

Keyser led the way rushing the ball with 10 carries for 51 yards. Whealrey had one carry for 35 yards and a touchdown, and McDowell added one carry for six yards.

Defensively, the Lady Buffs intercepted five passes on the afternoon, returning them for a combined 55 yards. Senior Parker Bridges had one interception with a 36-yard return, LaPrise had two interceptions for 11 yards, and Rhodes and C. Quinn each added one interception apiece. The squad also recorded two sacks from Whealrey and McDowell. Rhodes led the team with five total flag pulls on the day. Senior Parker Bridges had six and Aniya Hall-Friday had five, while Whealrey had four. Mykelah Davis and LaPrise each had three. Padilla, McDowell, Anderson, Chloe Jackson and C. Quinn each had two, while Keyser, Christain Davis and K. Quinn also had pulls on the afternoon.
