Martin leads Lady Buffs Soccer to victory in season Opener

Milligan College, Tenn. (Aug. 22, 2009) --- The Milligan College women's soccer team opened up their 2009 campaign with an astounding victory over the Lady Tigers of Campbellsville University (Campbellsville, Ky.). The Lady Buffs knocked off the Lady Tigers by a final of 4-1.

Campbellsville struck first in the opening minutes as Lady Tiger Laura Swencki bounced a shot off of the crossbar in the third minute to give the Lady Tigers an early lead.

The Lady Buffs answered quickly complements of a goal by sophomore Rachel Martin (Blountville, Tenn.) in the 12th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Just minutes later sophomore defender Erin Brewer (Brownsburg, Ind.) gave the Lady Buffs the go ahead goal.

With just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Martin knocked in her second goal of the night to give the Lady Buffs a comfortable 3-1 lead heading into the break.

The score remained the same until junior Kristen Crute (Atlanta, Ga.) blazed by her Campbellsville defender and drilled a shot into the back of the net in the 72nd minute to give the Lady Buffs their final goal of the evening en-route to a season opening victory.

“We had a good overall team performance,” commented Head Coach Lisa Buckley. “We've got a lot of young players and we are still trying to figure out who we are as a team. I was especially pleased tonight to see the character of our ladies as they bounced back so quickly after being down in the opening minutes.”

The Lady Buffs travel to take on WVU-Tech Saturday, Aug. 29. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
