Buffs pick up road victory at VI

Bristol, Va. (Jan. 16, 2009) --- The Milligan College Buffs pulled away in the second half with a stout shooting performance as they picked up a 102-85 victory at Virginia Intermont on Saturday evening. The victory was the first win on the road for the Buffs in AAC play, and also snapped a three game losing streak on the road.

In the first half, the Cobras kept in touch of the Buffs, but had trouble keeping up with the Milligan shooters. For the half, the Buffs shot 61.5% from the field as they took a seven point advantage into the locker room at the break.

The Buffs began to pull away from Virginia Intermont at the start of the second half. All of the momentum switched early in the half to Milligan when Bryant Edwards (Tabor City, N.C) and Dustin McConnell (Kingsport, Tenn.) each added back-to-back 3-pointers. After that point, the Cobras were unable to catch up.

The victory was aided by an impressive night of shooting the ball by the Buffs. As a team, Milligan was 30-of-48 (62.5%) from inside the arc, and was 6-of-13 (46%) from behind the 3-point line.

Leading the charge for Milligan was Cordero Seymour (Inagua, Bahamas) who had a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Seymour also added three assists and three steals. Justin Sylvester (Kingsport, Tenn.) added 24 points including 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Torian Sitton (Hendersonville, N.C.) scored 11 points, while senior Kyle Donahue (Greeneville, Tenn.) had a solid night with eight points, six assists, and four rebounds.

As a team, it is the first time that the Buffs broke the 100-point barrier since February 2009. Tyler Devault (Kingsport, Tenn.) scored points 100 and 101 for Milligan.

“No game is an easy one in the AAC,” Head Coach Bill Robinson said. “We had to come in here and play our game. Cordero and Sylvester played great for us tonight.”

With the win, Milligan improved to 6-10 overall and 3-4 in AAC play, while Virginia Intermont fell to 0-7 in AAC action and 0-17 overall.

The Buffs return to the Tennessee side of Bristol on Monday when they face former AAC rival King College.

“We know we will definitely have to go to another level,” Robinson said of the King game. “We will have to go in there more prepared and focused on the task at hand. It is a huge rivalry, and a game that we look towards as possibly our biggest game of the year.”

Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
