Milligan College, Tenn. (Jan. 25, 2010) --- The Milligan College men's basketball team went down to the wire Monday night in a non-conference battle against NCAA Division III's Maryville College. With just three seconds remaining on the clock Milligan's
Cordero Seymour raced down the floor and threw up a floater that was enough to lift the Buffs past the Scots, 76-74. ÂÂ
The Buffs took a 36-29 lead into the locker room at halftime over the 36th ranked Scots, but an 8-2 Maryville run would cut the Milligan lead to just one point with a little over 16 minutes remaining. From there on the ball game saw 12 lead changes and 10 ties causing excitement inside of Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. ÂÂ
With 51 ticks on the clock,
Justin Sylvester netted the back end of the bonus to tie the ball game at 71 apiece. A steal by
Bryant Edwards and a Maryville foul would send
Torian Sitton to the line for two throws. Sitton hit 1-of-2 to give the Buffs the advantage. ÂÂ
Another Scot turnover sent Edwards to the line with a chance to finish Maryville off. Edwards, a 77 percent free throw shooter on the year, missed the front end of the bonus but grabbed his own rebound and was immediately sent back to the charity stripe. With a second chance, Edwards made the most of it and put the Buffs up by three. ÂÂ
With the length of the floor and 12 seconds remaining, Maryville found sophomore Jordan Damron who netted a 3-point dagger to tie the ball game at 74 all, forcing Head Coach
Bill Robinson to call his final timeout. ÂÂ
“We wanted to find a way to get the ball to Cordero and either get Bryant (Edwards) or Justin (Sylvester) the ball with momentum, and they just took those guys away so Cordero (Seymour) had no other choice but to just drive and make a play,” added Robinson.ÂÂ
Make the play he did. With 3.3 seconds on the clock Seymour weaved between Maryville's defenders and threw up a shot that floated through the air and found the bottom of the net, lifting the Buffs to victory.ÂÂ
“With about 2 minutes left I just kept thinking good teams find ways to win these types of games and teams that are young and growing up find ways to lose,” commented Robinson. “We finally found a way to win one of these games. I'm really proud of our squad.”ÂÂ
Leading the way for the Buffs on the offensive end was Sylvester with 22 points and four assists, while Edwards was a bucket behind with 20 points and three assists. Seymour pitched in 10 points and five rebounds on the night including the game winner. Greeneville native
Kyle Donahue also had 10 points and five rebounds on the night to round out the Buffs double-digit scorers. ÂÂ
Maryville's Eryk Watson led the way for the visitors with 24 points, while Greg Hernandez chipped in 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. ÂÂ
With the win the Buffs improve to 8-12 and remain at 4-5 in the AAC, while Maryville was handed their third loss on the year and slip to 16-3 overall. ÂÂ
“I just think it's huge and winning a couple games in a row will do that and being at home is obviously a big thing too,” said Robinson in closing. “This will bring us a lot of excitement and energy in practice tomorrow and with two points less tomorrow's practice would be dead.”
The Buffs remain are back in action for their second contest in three days Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., as they play host to the Cavs of UVA-Wise.    ÂÂ
