Athens, Tenn. (November 13, 2010) --- The No. 3 seeded Milligan College women's soccer team fell to top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan University 1-0 in the AAC tournament finals on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Tennessee Wesleyan in Athens, Tenn.
In the first half, Tennessee Wesleyan put defensive pressure on the Lady Buffs putting up 12 shots, seven of which being on goal, while also limiting Milligan to one shot. Despite the Lady Buffs' first-half defensive efforts, Tennessee Wesleyan's midfielder Rebecca Kent was able to score the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute. The goal proved to be enough to seal the 1-0 victory and the AAC championship for the Lady Bulldogs.
After some halftime adjustments, Milligan better matched Tennessee Wesleyan's offensive attack in the second half recording five shots to the Lady Bulldogs' seven, including shots on goal from freshman midfielder
Hannah Kellogg (Louisville, Ky.) and junior defender
Erin Brewer (Brownsburg, Ind.). Despite their attempts, however, the Lady Buffs were unable to score the tying goal.
Defensively, AAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year
Heather Crumplen (Courtice, Ontario) recorded four saves before leaving the game with an injury in the 19th minute. Freshman
Lauren McInturff (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded six saves and allowed one goal.
“It is always disappointing to lose, especially in the championship game,” Head Coach
Lisa Buckley said. “I am proud of my girls and the season that they have had. We just didn't get the ball to bounce our way today.”
The Lady Buffs ended the regular season with an 8-6-2 overall record, while finishing tied for first in AAC play with a 5-1 record. Milligan will graduate two seniors from the lineup after this season in forward Karen Zutt (Louisville, Ky.) and defender Kristen Krute (Marietta, Ga.).
