Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 15, 2010) --- The Milligan College men's basketball team fell to former AAC rival, King (Tenn.) College, Monday night inside of Steve Lacy Fieldhouse by the final of 92-49.
The Buffs came out of the gate slow, as the Tornado, in their first season as a NCAA Div. II school, stormed out to a 13-0 lead in the opening five minutes.
Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) finally got Milligan on the board with his put back and one play with 14:44 remaining.
Kyle Donahue (Greeneville, Tenn.) closed the deficit to 10 points with his field goal at the 12:11 mark before King went on another run to add to their lead.
The rest of the first half saw Milligan try to stay in touch with King, but nine points is as close as the Buffs would get when
Rex Carpenter (Gray, Tenn.) drained a 3-pointer with 4:22 remaining. At the break, Milligan trailed King 40-23.
As a team, the Buffs were 9-of-28 (32%) from the field and 2-of-6 from behind the arc in the opener, while King was 15-of-35 (43&) from the field goal and 3-of-15 (20%) from behind the 3-point line.
The second half saw Milligan unable to keep up with the Tornado as King outscored the Buffs 14-7 in the first five minutes. From there, it didn't get any easier for Milligan as they were unable to catch up to King for the rest of the game.
The Buffs were led by Seymour's 15 points and seven rebounds. Donahue added seven points for the Buffs while
Emmanuel Colon (Salinas, Puerto Rico) had five points and two steals.
As a team, Milligan was 18-of-56 (32%) from the field and 4-of-15 (27%) from the 3-point line while the visiting Tornado was 34-of-67 (51%) from the field and 7-of-24 (29%) from behind the arc.
With the loss, the Buffs fall to 10-18 overall and remain at 5-9 in the AAC, while the Tornado improve to 17-4 overall.
“You just have to play almost a perfect game when you play a team at this level,” Head Coach
Bill Robinson said. “You cannot go through the stretches where you go cold for five minutes. It took us over five minutes to get a bucket, and we have to be able to come out and compete right away. They set the tone and were the aggressors, and we have to be able, especially at our place, keep our crowd involved and play well the first five minutes. I feel like if we play well the first five minutes, we have a chance. We actually played them even the last fifteen minutes of the first half, but that 13-0 run stretch to start the game just killed us. “
The Buffs return to Steve Lacy Fieldhouse for their last regular season home game when they host AAC foe Virginia Intermont. Milligan looks to duplicate the success they had earlier in the season in Bristol when they defeated the Cobras 102-85. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
