Buffs fall in regular season closer

Athens, Tenn. (Feb. 20, 2010) --- Despite a big game from Cordero Seymour (Inagua, Bahamas), the Milligan College Buffs fell short 91-80 in their last game of the regular season to Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon inside of James L. Robb Gymnasium.

Milligan struck first when Seymour drained a pair of free throws, but from there the Bulldogs responded quickly as they went on a 7-0 run to pull ahead. Despite the run, the Buffs did not give up as they closed the deficit back to four with 13:56 remaining. Tennessee Wesleyan went on another run to pull farther ahead as they opened up a 31-22 lead with 7:00 minutes remaining in the half. Milligan tried to close the gap but was unable to do so as they trailed 50-31 at the half.

In the closing half, the Buffs continued to fight as they slowly chipped away at the Bulldog lead. Milligan made a 6-0 run midway through the second half sparked by a Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) basket and free throw to close the score to 68-55 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. That was as close as the Buffs could get to the end of the contest and the final score.

Seymour led the way for the Buffs with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Dobyns-Bennett product Justin Sylvester (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Bryant Edwards (Tabor City, N.C.) had 10 points apiece, while DeVault and Torrian Sitton (Hendersonville, N.C.) had eight and seven points, respectively.

As a team, Milligan was 27-of-65 (41%) from the field and 6-of-17 (35%) from behind the arc, while the Bulldogs were 29-of-55 (53%) and 8-of-20 (40%) from behind the 3-point line.

The loss drops Milligan to 5-11 in the AAC and 10-20 overall, while Tennessee Wesleyan moves to 10-6 in the AAC and 13-15 overall.

Milligan's next game will be on Wednesday in the AAC Tournament quarterfinals. The Buffs will learn their opponent and location later in the weekend once all conference games are finished.
