Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 21, 2010) --- The Milligan College baseball team picked up the win in game one against the Warriors of Indiana Tech Sunday afternoon on Anglin Field 8-3, but faltered in game two as the visitors went on to win it by the final of 3-2. ÂÂ
After a scoreless first inning, the Buffs posted the first run on the board when
Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a lead-off double putting him in scoring position. Jones advanced to third after
Dallas Crouch (Jefferson City, Tenn.) grounded back to the pitcher and then the sacrifice from
Brett Maddox (Lake Butler, Fla.). ÂÂ
Indiana Tech was silent until the top of the fourth when they brought three Warriors across the plate. The Buffs would rally as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead 7-3. Milligan tacked on the insurance run in the sixth as they knocked off the visitors in game one of the doubleheader.
Aaron Dorriety (Pickens, S.C.) pitched a complete game earning the win for the Buffs in the opener. Dorriety scattered four hits and gave up three runs, only one of which was earned, while he struck out five. For the season, Dorriety is 1-0. ÂÂ
At the plate,
Kendall Williams (Dillon, S.C.) paced the men in white as he was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Jones also had a big first game going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Maddox pitched in three RBIs in his 1-for-3 performance. ÂÂ
In the nightcap, Indiana Tech struck first bringing in a runner in the top of the first inning. Milligan would remain scoreless until the third inning when they brought two Buffs across the plate to regain the lead. ÂÂ
In the top of the fourth, the Warriors knotted the game back at 2-2 and it would remain that way until the top of the sixth. Indiana Tech scored Gordon Jones on a sacrifice fly from Paul McIntosh to break the stalemate. The Buffs tried to muster up the comeback, but were unsuccessful. ÂÂ
Despite a valiant effort by the hard throwing right-hander,
Mike Gallo (Peabody, Mass.), it was not enough for the win. Gallo threw five complete innings, scattering four hits and yielding three runs, only one of which was earned, but it was
Frank Newcomb (Knoxville, Tenn.) who was credited with the loss. Newcomb pitched one inning, gave up a hit and did not give up any earned runs. For the year, Newcomb is 1-1.  ÂÂ
Offensively,
Randy Rabon (York, S.C.) was 1-for-3 in the second game with an RBI and a run scored. Former Happy Valley standout,
Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.), was 1-for-4 on the day.ÂÂ
“The positive is, I thought our pitchers threw very well today,” Head Coach
Nathan Meade said.” They gave us a chance to win both games; and a chance to win the ball game is all you can ask for. We have a long way to go, but we have a good club here. We just have to fine tune some things.”ÂÂ
After the weekend, the Buffs are 3-3, while the Indiana Tech Warriors are 2-2. ÂÂ
Milligan returns to the diamond Wednesday, Feb. 24, as they travel to Emory & Henry for a doubleheader against the Wasps. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
