Lady Buffs back to winning ways on road

Lookout Mountain, Ga. (Feb. 3, 2010) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team won handily on the road against former AAC foe, Covenant (Ga.) College Wednesday night in non-conference action. The Lady Buffs finished off the Lady Scots, 70-39.

Covenant stuck first in the ball game, but after that Milligan took the reins and never looked back. In the opener, the Lady Buffs led by as many as 21 points compliments of a strong rebounding performance. Milligan outrebounded the Lady Scots 29-15. At the break, Milligan stood atop Covenant 39-21.

In the second half, a field goal by Jamiee Hill (Johnson City, Tenn.) with 6:22 left on the clock gave the Lady Buffs their biggest lead of the game, 65-31. After that, the visiting Lady Buffs never looked back as they cruised to a 31 point victory.

Leading the way on the offensive end for the Lady Buffs was Alisha Mainer (Flag Pond, Tenn.) with 13 points and 13 rebounds, marking her fourth double-double on the year. Sophomore Samantha Blevins (Spruce Pine, N.C.) had a hot shooting hand for the Lady Buffs as she went 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and 4-of-5 from the free throw line for 12 points. Megan Casteel (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Heather Mandela (Fairfax, Va.) also added 10 points apiece.

“Two things really stuck out at me tonight,” said Head Coach Rich Aubrey. “The rebounding stats which were 54-31, and on our 27 field goals we had 22 assists. It was a good overall effort and hopefully we built some momentum as we begin preparation for Bryan on Saturday.”

Offensively for the Lady Scots Erika Forland led the way with 10 points, eight rebounds, and seven blocked shots.

With the win the Lady Buffs snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 15-10 overall, while the Lady Scots drop to 7-12 on the season.

The Lady Buffs start a four-game home stand on Saturday Feb. 5, when the Lady Lions of Bryan College come to town. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
