Milligan tennis wins first conference match; split at Champions club

Lookout Mountain, Ga. (March 20, 2010) --- The Milligan College men's and women's tennis teams won their first conference match against Reinhardt College in Waleska, Ga., with the women winning 9-0 and the men winning 7-2 on Friday, March 19. The following day, both men's and women's teams competed at the Champions Club against Covenant College with the men losing 0-9 and the women falling 4-5.

Against Reinhardt, the number one doubles team of Wesley Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Ricky Jones (Elizabethton, Tenn.) defeated Tyler Winters and Justin Wagner 8-2 to get the day started off right for the Buffs.

In singles play, Bryan Upshaw (Kingsport, Tenn.) defeated Bobby Bolender in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to get the victory. Kody Horne (Summertown, Tenn.) also won his singles match handily as he defeated Justin Wagner in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

With the win the Buffs improve to 1-4 on the season and 1-0 in the AAC.

On the women's side, the number one doubles team of Caitlin Conley (Bristol, Tenn.) and Jessie Rose Remegi (Hilton Head, S.C.) defeated Kayla and Kristi Spivey 9-7.

In singles play, number one Conley again starred as she defeated Kayla Spivey in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Halie Winfrey (Fayetteville, Ga.) also won in straight sets putting down Lauren Long, 6-3, 6-1.

With the win the Lady Buffs improve to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in the AAC.

At the Champions Club against Covenant College the men lost 0-9. The number two doubles team of Upshaw and Horne played a tightly contested match but eventually fell to John Hirte and Stephen Woody 6-8.

In singles play, Rice battled Hirte to the tiebreaker in the second set but eventually fell 6-2, 7-5. Upshaw also played a tight match and after winning the first set, he dropped the next two to fall 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

With the loss the men drop to 1-5 for the season and 1-1 in the AAC.

On the ladies side, it was very close but the women eventually won 5-4. The number three doubles team of Janie Mullins (Greenville, Ala.) and Heather Bell (Franklin, N.C.) won by the score of 8-6.

In singles play, Celeste Carpenter (Mountain City, Tenn.) went on to defeat Stephanie Sizemore in straight sets 6-0, 6-2, while Mullins went on to defeat Michelle Whitbeck in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-0.

With the win the Lady Buffs improve to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in the AAC.

Both teams will play Mars Hill on March 24 in Mars Hill, N.C. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
