Milligan splits with No. 24 Union

Milligan College, Tenn. (April 17, 2010) --- The Milligan College baseball team split with the 24th ranked Bulldogs of Union (Ky.) College Saturday afternoon in AAC double dip. The Bulldogs narrowly escaped the Buffs in the opener 3-1, but Milligan avenged the loss by defeating Union in the night cap 3-1.

Milligan broke the three and a half scoreless innings in the bottom of the fourth as senior Eric Oxley (Ardmore, Tenn.) scored on the sacrifice fly from the bat of sophomore Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) to give the Buffs the advantage. Milligan would hold the lead until the top of the seventh when Union brought in three Bulldogs to take the lead and eventually the first game of the series.

On the hill for the Buffs in the first game was Colin Duffie (Calhoun, Ga.) who earned the loss in seven complete innings of work. Duffie gave up three runs on seven hits, two of which were earned, while striking out two. For the year, Duffie slips to 2-6 overall.

Offensively, senior Dallas Crouch (Jefferson City, Tenn.) led the way going 1-for-1 in a pinch hit appearance, while sophomore Dustin Ford (Jonesborough, Tenn.) was 1-for-2 and senior Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 1-for-3 at the plate.

In the nightcap, Milligan marked in the first and third innings to sit comfortably on top of the Bulldogs 2-0. Union rallied in the sixth trying to muster up the comeback as they brought their lone run across the plate to tighten the gap. Freshman Brett Maddox (Lake Butler, Fla.) would answer for the Buffs in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to deep center field to push the game out of reach for the visiting Bulldogs.

Senior Shawn Ray (York, S.C.) earned the win in Game 2 in five innings of work. Ray scattered four hits and yielded no runs, while striking out two. Junior Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) earned the save in the relief effort as he struck out two and improves his save tally to 11 on the season.

Maddox was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored to lead the home team at the plate in the second game. Senior Ricky Morgan (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 2-for-3 in the outing, while fellow senior Kendall Williams (Dillon, S.C.) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

After the doubleheader, Milligan goes to 26-13 overall and 14-6 in the league, while No. 24 Union sits at 30-12 on the year and 15-5 in the AAC.

The Buffs wrap up the series with Union Sunday, April 18, on Anglin Field for the single 9-inning contest which is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
