Montgomery, Ala. (Sept. 3, 2010) --- The Milligan College men's soccer team came up short in the opener of the AUM Capital City Classic as they fell 4-0 to host Auburn University of Montgomery on Friday afternoon.
The Buffs were unable to keep pace with the Senators, who were ranked 17th in the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Preseason Top 25. AUM jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute then added goals in the 40th and 42nd minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Milligan kept fighting, but they were unable to catch up in the contest.
Alexander Haun (Knoxville, Tenn.) got the nod at goalie for the Buffs. He recorded nine saves in the game while allowing four goals. Connor Peters (Cookeville, Tenn.) closed out the game as goalie and recorded three saves.
With the loss, the Buffs fall to 0-2 on the year, while AUM improves to 2-1-1.
“We challenged ourselves and came up short tonight,” Head Coach Adam Laney said. “We feel like we are capable of playing at this level if we can execute better. We will return and try it again tomorrow.”
Milligan returns to action on Saturday when they take on the University of Mobile (Ala.) in the second day of the AUM Capital City Classic. Game time is set for noon.
