Barbourville, Ky. (Jan. 19, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team used a 30-point performance from senior
Heather Mandela (Fairfax, Va.) to take a 100-83 victory over AAC foe Union College on Wednesday evening inside Robison Arena in Barbourville, Ky.
Johneshia Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) opened the game with two straight 3-pointers to give the Lady Buffs an early 6-0 lead. Union cut the margin to two points, but two free throws from
Alisha Mainer (Flag Pond, Tenn.) and a layup from
Kayla Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) pushed the Lady Buffs to a 20-14 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the half. Milligan continued to maintain the lead for the remainder of the half as they led 49-45 at halftime.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Mandela scored five straight points to spark a 9-0 run for the Lady Buffs. Milligan took advantage as they kept the lead in double digits the rest of the game as they kept the Lady Bulldogs at bay.
Mandela led the way with her 11th double-double of the season with 30 points and 19 rebounds. Mainer added 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Good recorded 12 points and six assists. Kelly had 11 points.
As a team, Milligan was 38-of-77 (49%) from the floor and 3-of-11 (27%) from behind the arc. Union was 30-of-84 (35%) from the field and 13-of-35 (37%) from the 3-point line. The Lady Buffs out-rebounded Union 63-39.
With the victory, Milligan improves to 3-2 in AAC action and 15-6 overall.
The Lady Buffs return to Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 22, when they host Montreat for an AAC clash. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
