Milligan women's basketball drops home opener

Milligan College, Tenn. (Nov. 8, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team came up short in their home opener as they fell 70-54 to Lees-McRae College on Tuesday night inside Steve Lacey Fieldhouse.
 
   In the first half, Jamiee Hill (Johnson City, Tenn.) gave Milligan their first lead of the game with a lay-up with 12:52 remaining in the first half. Back-to-back buckets by freshman Chelsey Weddle (Hampton, Tenn.) and Hill gave Milligan a 22-14 lead with six minutes remaining in the half. However, Lees-McRae slowly cut at the Buffaloes lead, and took a 32-28 advantage into the half.
 
   Hill led the Buffaloes in the first half with 10 points, and Alisha Mainer (Flag Pond, Tenn.) had eight points. As a team, Milligan shot 11-of-30 (37%) from the floor, while Lees-McRae was 13-of-26 (50%).
 
   The start of the second half saw the Buffaloes unable to cut into the gap as they trailed 42-36 eight minutes into the frame. Ashlee Price (Rogersville, Tenn.) hit a jump shot and Weddle drained a 3-pointer to cut the gap to 47-43 with just under 10 minutes remaining. However that was as close as the Buffaloes could get as they trailed by six with five minutes remaining, and the Lady Bobcats took advantage of a late run to put the game away.
 
   Hill ended the game with 14 points, while Mainer ended the game with eight points and seven points. Johneshia Good (Johnson City, Tenn.) also recorded eight points for the Buffaloes.
 
   As a team, Milligan ended the game 22-of-61 (36%) from the floor, and was 3-of-12 (25%) from behind the arc. Lees-McRae was 26-of-50 (52%) and 5-of-8 (63%) from the floor.
 
   With the loss, the Buffaloes fall to 0-2.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Friday, Nov. 11, when they host the Milligan Classic inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. Milligan begins the event with St. Thomas University at 7:30 p.m.
