Milligan men's basketball unable to hold off late rally

Milligan College, Tenn. (Dec. 16, 2011) --- The Milligan College men's basketball team was unable to hold off a late Alice Lloyd rally as the Buffaloes fell 69-68 on a last second shot in nonconference action on Friday afternoon inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
 
   The Buffaloes quickly opened the game on a 7-0 run, as freshman Mickey Woods (Port Arthur, Tex.) scored five early points. The Eagles got a bucket five minutes into the game, but Milligan pushed their advantage to 13-3 with just under 12 minutes remaining and led 17-9 midway through the frame.
 
   Milligan maintained their advantage as Woods drained a 3-pointer with 6:37 left to move the score to 24-15. The Buffaloes kept the Eagles at bay for the remainder of the half, and Kyle Grisby (Charlotte, N.C.) hit two 3-pointers in the final minute to give Milligan a 38-24 lead at the break.
 
   Grisby and Woods had 12 points apiece to pave Milligan in the first half, while Brandon Hayes and Casey Dalton had seven points to lead the Eagles. As a team, Milligan was 18-of-41 (44%) from the floor and 4-of-15 (27%) from the floor. Alice Lloyd was 7-of-32 (22%) from the field and 2-of-11 (18%) from the 3-point line.
 
   The Eagles opened the second half with a 10-0 run as they closed the gap to six points just four minutes into the half. Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) opened the scoring for Milligan with a jumper, and then added three more points to give Milligan a 47-41 lead with 13 minutes left in the half.
 
   After the Eagles cut the lead to one point, Cory Hendren (Lexington, S.C.) capped off a Milligan run with a 3-pointer that gave the Buffaloes a 52-48 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
 
   Morgan Mcleod (Hickory, N.C.) helped spur the Buffaloes on a 10-2 run as he poured in five points, and Woods capped the run off with four straight free throws as Milligan took a 62-51 lead with five minutes remaining. However, the Eagles kept trimming the Milligan lead as they cut it back to four points with 2:33 remaining, and then closed to one with a 3-pointer with 1:45 left.
 
   Alice Lloyd knocked down a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left to tie the game, but Grisby responded with a pair of free throws on the other end to regain a 68-67 lead for Milligan with 21 seconds on the clock. However, the Eagles grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw with 2.5 seconds left and knocked a shot in with .6 seconds to grab the win.
  
   Grisby led the Buffaloes with 17 points, while Woods ended the game with 16 points. Marshall Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) tallied up 10 points and 12 rebounds. DeVault and Hendren had nine and seven points, respectively.
 
   As a team, the Buffaloes were 26-of-66 (39%) from the field and 6-of-25 (24%) from the 3-point line. Alice Lloyd ended the night 21-of-59 (37%) from the floor and 6-of-20 (30%) from the 3-point line.
 
   With the loss, Milligan falls to 4-6 overall and remain 2-0 in the AAC.
 
   The Buffaloes will wrap up 2011 on Monday, Dec. 19, as they travel to cross town foe ETSU for an exhibition matchup. Game time against the Buccaneers in the MHSA Athletic Center is slated for 7 p.m.
