Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 12, 2011) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team won their 20th game of the season on Saturday afternoon as they picked up a 79-59 victory over Union College inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
Milligan came out of the gates firing, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. Union cut the lead down to one three times before
Megan Casteel (Greenville, Tenn.) hit a 3-pointer to put the Buffaloes up by six. Milligan continued to press that advantage, leading by as much as twenty, going into the half up 43-23. The Buffaloes were lead by
Johneshia Good (Johnson City, Tenn.), who made four three's in the first half.
In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs slowly cut the lead to fourteen. The Buffs quickly rebounded and stretched the lead back up to twenty before a final Bulldog run cut the lead to ten with nine minutes remaining. However, the Buffaloes were able to regain momentum and push the lead out to twenty once more and cruised to the finish.
The Buffaloes were lead by
Heather Mandela (Fairfax, Va.), who scored 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Milligan had three other double-digit scorers, with
Alisha Mainer (Flag Pond, Tenn.) scoring 15 points, while Good and Casteel finished with 12 points.
As a team, the Buffaloes were 26-of-53 (49%) from the floor and 9-of-18 (50%) from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Bulldogs were held to 18-of-57 (32%) from the field and 8-of-29 (28%) from behind the arc.
With the win, the Lady Buffs move to 20-9 overall and 8-4 in the AAC. It is the Buffaloes third consecutive 20-win season.
Milligan returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 16, when they travel to Montreat College to take on the Lady Cavaliers. Game starts at 5:30.
