Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2011) --- The Milligan College softball team won a pair of shutouts on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the University of the Cumberlands 4-0 and 1-0 in a nonconference doubleheader at Anglin Field.
In the first game, the Buffaloes jumped out early and then held on to the take the victory. The first inning saw
Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) open the batting up with a triple for Milligan. She crossed the plate after a wild pitch, while
Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) and
Jessica Fix (Chesapeake, Va.) also crossed the plate to give Milligan a 3-0 lead after one.
Ellyn Sapp (Johnson City, Tenn.) crossed the plate in the second inning to cap the scoring for the Buffaloes
At the plate, Alicia Ingle (Erwin, Tenn.) and Fix was 1-for-2.
Sidney Burns (Tallahassee, Fla.) got the nod in the pitching circle and got the win in six innings of work. She gave up just two hits and struck out eight Patriot batters.
In the second game, Milligan scored a late run to take the slim victory. Chancil Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) crossed the plate in the sixth inning as the game winning run.
Connatser was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Buffaloes.
Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.),
Maleah Wolfenbarger (Knoxville, Tenn.),
Brittany DiRobbio (Oviedo, Fla.) and Lambdin all recorded a hit in the contest.
Connatser got the start and recorded the win for the Buffaloes. She went the distance as she struck out eight batters and allowed just two hits.
Milligan returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 23, when they travel to Wise, Va., for a nonconference doubleheader with UVA-Wise. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
