Kingsport, Tenn. (Apr. 29, 2011) --- The Milligan College softball team advanced to the AAC softball tournament championship game, but came up short as they fell 4-0 to Reinhardt University on Friday afternoon at Domtar Park in Kingsport, Tenn. The Buffaloes defeated Montreat 7-6 earlier in the day to advance in the tournament.
Against Reinhardt, neither team was able to get on the board until Reinhardt scored four runs in the fourth inning. Milligan loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but was unable to counter the Reinhardt attack.
At the plate,
Ellyn Sapp (Johnson City, Tenn.) was 1-for-2, while
Rachel Ingleby (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 1-for-1.
Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) was handed the loss in the pitching circle as she allowed four runs on three hits.
The Buffaloes advanced to the title game against Reinhardt as they held off a Montreat rally in the first game of the day. Milligan got on the board in the first inning when Connatser hit a grand slam, but Montreat countered with a run of their own to give the Buffaloes a 4-1 lead after the first inning.
The Buffaloes added to their advantage in the fifth when
Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.),
Jessica Fix (Chesapeake, Va.) and
Brittany DiRobbio (Oviedo, Fla.) crossed the plate. Montreat scored three runs in the sixth, but Milligan hung on in the game's final inning to take the victory.
Senior
Sidney Burns (Tallahassee, Fla.) picked up the win in the pitching circle. In four innings of work, Burns allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out six batters.
Milligan was led at the plate by freshman
Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) as she was 3-for-3 with one RBI. Connatser was 1-for-2 with four RBIs, and Burns was 1-for-2.
Milligan ends the season with a 32-19 record overall and had a 9-5 record in AAC action. The Buffaloes graduate four seniors in
Megan Heaton (Elizabethton, Tenn.),
Alicia Engle (Erwin, Tenn.), Sapp and Burns, who will leave as the record holder for most of Milligan's pitching stats.
