DeVault lifts Milligan men's basketball over Barber-Scotia

Milligan College, Tenn. (Jan. 18, 2012) --- Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) scored six points in the final minute to lift Milligan past Barber-Scotia 75-74 in nonconference action on Wednesday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
 
   In the first half, the Buffaloes jumped out quickly to a 6-2 lead. However, the Sabers slowly cut into the Milligan lead before jumping out to a 13-11 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
 
   Marshall Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) regained the lead for Milligan, but the teams swapped the lead multiple times before DeVault hit a jumper with 5:54 left in the half to put Milligan up 28-25. From there, the Buffaloes scored eight unanswered to propel them to a 36-35 lead at the break.
 
   Kyle Grisby (Charlotte, N.C.) led Milligan in the half with nine points, and DeVault recorded seven points in the frame. As a team, Milligan was 13-of-27 (48%) from the field and 4-of-8 (50%) from the behind the 3-point line. Barber-Scotia was 15-of-27 (56%) from the floor and 4-of-7 (57%) from behind the arc.
 
   The start of the second half saw Mickey Woods (Port Arthur, Tex.) drain a 3-pointer and Torian Sitton (Hendersonville, N.C.) hit a jumper to give the Buffaloes a 41-38 lead four minutes in. After the teams traded shots, the Sabers responded with five straight points to take a two point lead, but a Grisby 3-pointer put Milligan back in front with 13 minutes left in the game.
 
    The Sabers countered another pair of Grisby 3-pointers with eight straight points to take a 63-54 lead. However, Woods hit a three to spark a 9-0 run that pulled the Buffaloes within two points with six minutes left.
 
   After Barber-Scotia extended their lead back to eight points, the Buffaloes cut into the gap with baskets from Woods and a Sitton basket with just over a minute to play cut the Milligan gap to 73-69. In the final minute, DeVault hit a pair of free throws and a jumper to cut the gap to 74-73 lead with 35 seconds left, and then put the Buffaloes ahead with another pair of free throws with 20 seconds left. The Milligan defense rose to the occasion as they kept Barber-Scotia from scoring on their final possession to secure the win.
 
   Grisby led the way with 18 points, while DeVault recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Woods and Sitton had 15 and 11 points, respectively. Hardy ended the night with seven points.
 
      As a team, Milligan was 25-of-50 (50%) from the field and 8-of-16 (50%) from behind the arc. The Sabers finished the game 30-of-55 (54%) from the floor and 5-of-12 (42%) from the 3-point line.
 
   With the win, Milligan improves to 7-10 overall and remain 3-4 in conference play.
 
   The Buffaloes return to conference action on Saturday, Jan. 21, as they travel to AAC newcomer Point University. Game time in East Point, Ga., is slated for 3 p.m.
