Milligan men's basketball falls in AAC thriller

Bristol, Va. (Jan. 25, 2012) --- The Milligan College men's basketball team was unable to convert a last second shot as they fell 84-81 to AAC foe Virginia Intermont on Wednesday night in Bristol, Va.
 
   In the first half, the teams traded baskets as the game was tied at eight five minutes in. Virginia Intermont slowly took an advantage as they led 25-16 midway through the half.

  Milligan, however, began to methodically cut into the lead with points from Chris Ellis (Bristol, Tenn.) and Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.). The Buffaloes ended the half on an 11-5 run to take a 44-42 lead at the half.
 
   Kyle Grisby (Charlotte, N.C.) led Milligan in the half with 14 points, while Mickey Woods (Port Arthur, Tex.) added eight points. As a team, the Buffaloes were 13-of-30 (43%) from the field and 4-of-10 (40%) from the 3-point line. VI ended the half 18-of-27 (67%) from the floor and 3-of-6 (50%) from the arc.
 
   The teams traded buckets to start the second half, and Milligan used a 6-0 run to take a 52-45 lead in the half's opening minutes. VI responded with a run of their own to cut their deficit to three points. From there, the teams traded baskets and the Buffaloes rebuilt a 65-59 lead just past the halfway point.
 
   However, a pair of runs saw the teams traded the lead as the Cobras jumped back out in front. The Buffaloes kept fighting as they regained a 77-76 lead with 2:20 left in the game. VI tied the game with a pair of free throws, and the Buffaloes were unable to get back in front in the game's final minute.
 
   Grisby led the way with 18 points, while DeVault ended the night with 17 points. The freshman Ellis recorded 14 points. Torian Sitton (Hendersonville, N.C.) had 11 points.
 
   As a team, Milligan was 28-of-68 (41%) from the floor and 4-of-16 (25%) from the 3-point line. VI ended the night 28-of-50 (56%) from the field and 4-of-11 (36%) from the 3-point line.
 
   With the loss, Milligan falls to 3-6 in AAC action and 7-12 overall, while VI improves to 3-6 in conference play and 10-11 overall.

   The Buffaloes return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, as they host Montreat College in an AAC clash. Game time is set for 4 p.m., inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
