Milligan volleyball drops five set thriller

Barbourville, Ky. (Oct. 25, 2012) --- The Milligan College volleyball team fell short in a five set thriller on Thursday night as they fell 3-2 to Union College in Appalachian Athletic Conference action in Barbourville, Ky.
 
   After falling 25-17 in the match's first set, the Buffaloes jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second set and then held off a late Union rally as they took the set 25-22. The third set saw neither team able to pull away until Milligan closed out the set strong to take a 25-20 victory. Union slowly pulled away from the Buffaloes in the fourth set to take a 25-20 set victory, and then jumped out early to take a 15-7 set victory in the decisive fifth set to secure the match.
 
   Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) had 44 assists and 11 digs, while Holly English (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 13 digs and nine kills. Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) tallied 17 kills. Katelin Henson (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Kaitlyn Qualls (Broomfield, Colo.) recorded 24 and 23 digs, respectively, while Kylinn Brenden (Billings, Mo.) had eight kills. Freshman Savannah Benton (Kingsport, Tenn.) ended the math with six kills.
 
   With the loss, Milligan falls to 17-13 overall and 11-4 in AAC action.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 30, as they host AAC foe Virginia Intermont. The Lady Cobras, who handed the Buffaloes their first conference loss of the season, have won 14 straight matches. Match time in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse is slated for 6:30 p.m.
