Milligan volleyball stops VI in AAC action

Milligan College, Tenn. (Oct. 30, 2012) --- The Milligan College volleyball team picked up an important Appalachian Athletic Conference win on Tuesday night as they defeated Virginia Intermont 3-0 inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. The win by Milligan snaps a 14-game winning streak by the Lady Cobras.
 
   After VI opened the match on an 8-3 run, the Buffaloes went on a 6-1 run to tie the first set at 9-9. The Lady Cobras jumped back into the lead as they led 17-13, but Milligan fought back and ended the set on a 12-4 run to take the set 25-21. In the second set, the Buffaloes jumped out to an early lead and maintained it throughout most of the set as they took a 25-23 victory.
 
   The decisive third set saw Milligan and VI trade early points as the Buffaloes held an 8-7 advantage. After the Lady Cobras battled back into the lead, Milligan slowly battled back and kept VI at bay as they secured the match with a 25-22 set victory.
 
   Senior Chelsea Spivey (Gate City, Va.) recorded 23 assists and six kills, while Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) tallied up 10 kills and three block assists. Katelin Henson (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 13 digs, while Holly English (Kingsport, Tenn.) had 12 digs and six kills. Freshman Emilee Linkous (Morristown, Tenn.) ended the match with five kills.
 
   With the win, Milligan improves to 12-4 in AAC play and 18-13 overall, while Virginia Intermont falls to 12-4 in conference play and 20-8 on the season.
 
   The Buffaloes return to action on Friday, Nov. 2, as they host AAC leader Bryan College in a crucial conference clash. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m., inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
