Milligan women's basketball falls in AAC road game

Barbourville, Ky. (Feb. 8, 2012) --- The Milligan College women's basketball team was unable to overcome a late run as they fell 69-53 to Union (Ky.) College in AAC action on Wednesday afternoon in Barbourville, Ky.
 
   Alisha Mainer (Flag Pond, Tenn.) scored the first four points for the Buffaloes, but the Lady Bulldogs pulled out to a 16-6 lead with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. Milligan cut the gap with a 9-2 run that was capped off by a Dorian Freeman (Augusta, Ga.) basket to pull within three points. However, Union slowly extended their lead back to double-digits before a Kayla Kelly (Chattanooga, Tenn.) 3-pointer cut it to a 34-26 lead at the break.
 
   Mainer led the way in the first half with 10 points. As a team, the Buffaloes were 12-of-31 (39%) from the field and 1-of-10 (10%) from the 3-point line. Union finished the half 13-of-38 (39%) from the floor and 4-of-17 (24%) from behind the arc.
 
   After the Lady Bulldogs took their lead back to 12 points, the Buffaloes cut the gap as a Chelsey Weddle (Hampton, Tenn.) drained a 3-pointer with 9:37 left to pull to 48-43. However, Milligan was unable to answer a Union run in the second part of the half.
 
   Mainer ended the game with 15 points, while Jamiee Hill (Johnson City, Tenn.) had 10 points. Freeman recorded seven points. Kelly led the team with 11 rebounds.
 
   As a team, Milligan was 21-of-60 (35%) from the floor and 4-of-18 (22%) from behind the arc. The Lady Bulldogs ended the game 26-of-66 (39%) from the field and 6-of-25 (24% from the 3-point line.
 
   With the loss, the Buffaloes fall to 7-8 in AAC action and 15-12 overall.
 
   Milligan returns to Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 11, when they host No. 19 Tennessee Wesleyan in an AAC clash. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
