Buffaloes baseball takes series over VI with nine-inning victory

Bristol, Va. (April 21, 2012) --- The Milligan College baseball team captured the weekend Appalachian Athletic Conference series with Virginia Intermont on Saturday afternoon with a 6-2 victory in the nine-inning contest in Bristol, Va. The Buffaloes and Cobras split a doubleheader on Friday night.

After a scoreless first inning, the Buffaloes opened the scoring in the top of the second when Kyle Kolat (South Bend, Ind.) scored on a Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) single, but the Cobras tied the game with a run of their own in the home side of the inning.

Cory Hilton (Johnson City, Tenn.) broke the tie in the next frame with a solo homerun, and then Joe Purus (Hudson, N.C.) crossed the plate to extend the Milligan lead in the fourth. Neither team was able to get a run across the plate in the fifth as Milligan maintained a 3-1 lead after the inning.

The Buffaloes continued to extend their lead in the sixth when Hilton and Purus came across home plate. After Cobras added their final run of the game in the home side of the sixth, Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) capped the game's scoring off a Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) sacrifice fly.

Kolat and Malone were both 2-for-4, while Hilton was 2-for-5. On the mound, Sean Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up his fifth win of the season as he gave up just one run on eight hits. Jake Howell (Johnson City, Tenn.) picked up the save.

With the win, Milligan improves to 12-9 in AAC action and 24-23 overall.

The Buffaloes will return to action on Friday, April 27, when they host Union (Ky.) College in a weekend series. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
