Milligan and TWC softball stopped in seventh due to rain in AAC Tournament

Kingsport, Tenn. (April 26, 2012) --- The Milligan College softball team was unable to complete their Appalachian Athletic Conference Softball Tournament game with Tennessee Wesleyan before a strong storm stopped the game in the top of the seventh. The game is slated to resume at 10:30 a.m., on Friday morning at Domtar Park in Kingsport, Tenn., with the Buffaloes holding a 9-7 lead with one TWC out.

The Buffaloes advanced to the game with Tennessee Wesleyan by a 7-6 walk-off victory over Bryan. The winner of the Milligan and TWC game will square off against Virginia Intermont at 11 a.m., with a spot in the championship game on the line.

In the nightcap, the Buffaloes opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Emily Biggs (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit a two-run homerun to bring in Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) as Milligan took a 2-0 lead. Tennessee Wesleyan had three straight popups in the top of the second, and Milligan was unable to drive in two runners in the home side of the frame.

The Bulldogs put runners in scoring position in the third, but Krista Lambdin (Knoxville, Tenn.) ended the frame with a running catch. Milligan added to their lead when Biggs used a double to drive in Lambdin and Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) hit a three-run homerun over the left field fence to put Milligan up 6-0.

TWC finally broke onto the board in the guest side of the fourth with two runs, and Milligan was unable to capitalize on runners in scoring position. The fifth inning saw the Lady Bulldogs score three more runs as they closed the gap to 6-5 after the frame.

The Buffaloes loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth then capitalized when Biggs knocked in Brittany DiRobbio (Oviedo, Fla.) and Olvey. Milligan added another with a Sarah Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) RBI that drove in Lambdin. However, TWC scored two runs in the top of the seventh before the rains came that stopped the game at 11:02 p.m., and was called shortly thereafter.

At the plate, Lambdin and Biggs were 3-for-4, while Olvey and Connatser were 2-for-4.

In the day's first game, Milligan scored five runs in the first to take an early lead over Bryan. Arrowood drove in Lambdin in the second to give Milligan a 6-0 lead. However, the Lady Lions battled back to tie the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. However, Arrowood used a single to knock in Lambdin for the walk-off victory.

Kelsey Simmons (Elizabethton, Tenn.) was 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Biggs was 1-for-2.  Arrowood recorded three RBIs in the game. Connatser picked up the win in two innings of relief work as she allowed three runs on three hits.
