Milligan College, Tenn. (April 27, 2012) --- The Milligan College baseball team split an important Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon with Union (Ky.) College at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes took advantage of a Bulldog error in the eighth to win 6-5, but fell 6-0 in the nightcap.
The first game saw Milligan take a 3-0 lead after
Kyle Kolat (South Bend, Ind.) drive in
Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) and
Tyree Jefferies (Jackson, Tenn.) use a double to score
Joe Purus (Hudson, N.C.) and Kolat. Union closed the gap with a two-run homerun in the top of the third, but Milligan added a run when
Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) scored on a Kolat sacrifice fly.
However, the Bulldogs put a single run on the board in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game and force extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Tyler Brake put Union ahead with a solo homerun. The Buffaloes evened the score when Kolat scored on a
Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) hit, and then took the victory when Jefferies crossed the plate on a Union error.
Kolat led the way at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance with two RBIs. Kirk was 2-for-3, while Jones, Millsap and Jefferies added a hit apiece. On the mound,
Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) got the nod and gave up four runs on six hits in four innings of work.
Jake Howell (Elizabethton, Tenn.) picked up the win.
The second game saw neither team able to get anything going in the first three innings. Union broke onto the board in the top of the fourth with three runs, and then pulled away as they added single runs in the remaining three innings.
Cory Hilton (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Kirk were both 1-for-3. Freshman
Jake Watts (Boone, N.C.) picked up the loss on the mound. In just over three innings of work, Watts allowed three runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
With the split, Milligan moves to 25-24 overall and 13-10 in AAC action, while Union improves to 15-8 in conference play and 31-20 overall.
The Buffaloes and Bulldogs will square off in the final game of the regular season on Saturday, April 27. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., at Anglin Field.
