Milligan softball sees season end in AAC tournament

Kingsport, Tenn. (April 27, 2012) --- The Milligan College softball team saw their season end one game short of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Softball Tournament championship series as they fell 3-1 to Virginia Intermont on Friday at Domtar Park in Kingsport, Tenn.
 
   The Buffaloes advanced to the game earlier in the morning after wrapping up a 9-7 victory over Tennessee Wesleyan that was stopped Thursday night due to rain.
 
   Milligan put runners on first and second to open the game, but they were unable to score a run. The Buffaloes defense then closed the home side of inning with a double play after the Lady Cobras also put runners on the bases.
 
   The second and third inning saw neither team able to get a runner aboard as the game remained scoreless going into the fourth. After Milligan stranded runners on first and second, VI put a run on the board with a homerun from Samantha Perry-Shifflett to take a 1-0 lead.       
 
   After the Buffaloes were unable to get a runner on the base in the top of the fifth, the Milligan defense rose to the occasion against as Maleah Wolfenbarger (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Brittany DiRobbio (Oviedo, Fla.) made running catches to end the frame, and then both teams went three up and three down in the sixth.
 
   Milligan put runners on first and second in the top of the seventh. The Buffaloes tied the game on a VI error as Kelsey Simmons (Elizabethton, Tenn.) crossed the base to tie the game. However, the Lady Cobras responded with a walk-off homerun from Katelyn Mitchell to take the victory.
 
   Camille Olvey (Maryville, Tenn.) led the way at the plate with a 1-for-3 performance. Chancli Connatser (Maryville, Tenn.) was handed the loss as she allowed three runs on five hits.
 
   Earlier in the day, it only took Milligan five pitches to finish their 9-7 victory over Tennessee Wesleyan. The Buffaloes recorded a strikeout and pop-up to end the game, which was halted last night due to rain in the top of the seventh.
 
   Milligan finishes the season with a 30-21 record. The Buffaloes claimed a share of the AAC regular season title with a 14-4 record. Milligan will lose three seniors in Brooke Ingle (Waynesville, N.C.), Rachel Inglby (Knoxville, Tenn.) and DiRobbio.
