Buffaloes men's basketball pulls away from Knights

Milligan College, Tenn. (Jan. 29, 2013) --- The Milligan College men's basketball used a strong second half to pull away and take a 91-57 victory over Appalachian Athletic Conference foe St. Andrews University on Tuesday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. It was the Buffaloes fifth straight victory.
 
   Tyler DeVault (Kingsport, Tenn.) scored six of the first seven Milligan points as the Buffaloes ran out to a 15-8 lead six minutes into the game. The Buffaloes extended their lead to double-digits with a 3-pointer from Scott Blake (Greeneville, Tenn.) and a jumper from Torian Sitton (Hendersonville, N.C.), but the Knights cut the Milligan lead to five points just past the midway point of the first half.
 
   Kurt Brooks (Newport, Tenn.) hit a 3-pointer to spark Milligan to an 8-2 run that gave the Buffaloes a 32-21 lead with 6:52 left in the half. However, St. Andrews drained back-to-back 3-pointers to quickly close the gap. Morgan McLeod (Hickory, N.C.) added a pair of baskets as Milligan ran out to a 15 point lead, but the Knights closed the gap in the final minutes of the half as the Buffaloes held a 44-35 lead at the break.
 
    DeVault ended the half with 10 points, while McLeod recorded eight points. As a team, the Buffaloes were 17-of-32 (53%) from the field and 3-of-7 (43%) from behind the arc, while the Knights were 14-of-31 (45%) from the floor and 6-of-17 (35%) from behind the 3-point line.
 
   In the second half, DeVault opened the scoring for the Buffaloes, but St. Andrews slowly cut into the lead as Milligan held a 50-44 lead four minutes into the half. The Buffaloes used a 11-2 run over a four minutes stretched capped off by four points from DeVault and Cory Hendren (Lexington, S.C.) to take a 67-48 lead with 9:01 left in the game.
 
   Milligan continued to hold the momentum in the second part of the half as they continued to pull away from the Knights. Hendren scored nine straight points to give the Buffaloes a 74-54 lead with just under five minutes on the clock, and the Buffaloes maintained the advantage in the closing minutes to secure the win.
 
   DeVault led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Pettis and Hendren had 15 points apiece. Sitton and McLeod tallied 11 points apiece.
 
   As a team, Milligan finished the game 34-of-70 (49%) from the field and 6-of-20 (30%) from behind the 3-point line. St. Andrews finished the game 24-of-65 (37%) from the floor and 7-of-27 (26%) from behind the arc.
 
   The Buffaloes improve to 17-7 overall and 9-2 in conference action.
 
   Milligan returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 31, as they travel to AAC foe Reinhardt University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m., in Waleska, Ga.
