Women's volleyball drops first game of tournament

Kingsport, Tenn. (Nov. 14, 2013) â€" The women's volleyball team was unable find a rhythm as they fell 3-0 in the night's match up against the Koalas of Columbia College.

The Buffaloes started the first set strong staying within a point of Columbia for most of the set. It wouldn't be until the middle of the set when Columbia scored six unanswered points that the Buffaloes would fall behind. The Buffaloes struggled to find any sort of momentum in the first set after seeing several unanswered points late in the set giving the Koalas a 21-11 lead. The Koalas would lead the remainder of the set and win 25-17.

The Buffaloes fought back in the second set determined for a different outcome then the previous set. Milligan took advantage of some attack errors committed by Columbia to snatch the lead 7-3. Senior Kylie Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) would couple with teammates Jessica Davenport (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Samantha Bruinius (Tinley Park, Ill.) to jump to a 22-16 lead after three kills late in the game. However, the Buffaloes would fall prey to a four point run by Columbia to bring the game back within three at 24-21. The Buffaloes, again, would be unable to finish the set and would fall 27-25.

Early in the game's third set, the teams would only be separated by three points. However, the Koalas would make a six point run and jump to a 14-7 lead over the Buffaloes giving Milligan a substantial deficit. Columbia continued the offensive pressure increasing the difference to 22-13 late in the set. The Buffaloes would be unable to close the gap finishing the set 25-15 and handing the Koalas the win 3-0.

Offensively, Whaley contributed nine kills followed by Davenport's eight kills and 23 assists.

The Buffaloes finished their season with an overall record of 15-23 and a conference record of 10-10.
