Milligan baseball wins two over Berea

After the first two innings ended scoreless, the Mountaineers struck first with a run in the top of the third inning. Sam Tarleton (Chuckey, Tenn.) advanced to scoring position for Milligan in the home side of the inning, but the Buffaloes were unable to drive the run home.

Berea extended their lead to 3-0 with two runs in the top of the fourth, and Milligan was unable to answer. After retiring the Mountaineers in order to open the fifth inning, Tyree Jefferies (Jackson, Tenn.) scored on a single by Tarlton. The Milligan offense struck again in the sixth inning as Brett Mercurio (West Palm Beach, Fla.) scored on a walk and Tarlton drove Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) across home plate to tie the game at 3-3. Nick Loughry (Kingsport, Tenn.) drove in Jefferies with a sacrifice fly to give Milligan a 4-3 lead entering the final inning, and the Buffaloes retired the Berea batters in order to secure the win.

Tarlton led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Jefferies and Millsap were both 1-for-2.

On the mound, Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) picked up the win as he allowed just two earned runs on seven hits.

In the second game, the Buffaloes struck first when Jefferies scored on a Loughry single in the bottom of the second inning, and Milligan added another run in the home side of the third inning as Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) scored on a Brandon Malone (Maryville, Tenn.) single. The Mountaineers started the fourth inning with two runners on base, but the Buffaloes ended the inning with three straight outs to keep Berea scoreless.

After keeping the Mountaineers scoreless to start the fifth inning, Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) extended the Milligan lead to 3-0 on a Millsap sacrifice fly. The Buffaloes saw Berea load the bases in the top of the sixth inning, but Sean Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) ended the inning with a strikeout. Cody Hyder (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored the final run of the game on a Hunter Carpenter (Sneedville, Tenn.) hit.

Brent Whittington (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) picked up the win on the mound as he allowed just one run on four hits in five innings of work. Kirk finished the game 3-for-3, while Loughry was 2-for-3. McPherson and Malone each added a hit.

Milligan improves to 5-1 on the season.

The Buffaloes and Mountaineers are slated to return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16, for a doubleheader. Game time at Anglin Field is set for 12 p.m.
