Milligan baseball extends winning streak to seven games

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 19, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team extended their winning streak to seven games on Tuesday with a sweep of UVA-Wise at Anglin Field. The Buffaloes picked up an 11-4 victory in the day's opening game, and then cruised to a 10-1 victory in the final game.

In the first game of the day, the Buffaloes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Luke Kirk (Gate City, Va.) and Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) crossed home plate in the first inning. Kirk scored again in the bottom of the third on a Brandon Malone (Kingsport, Tenn.) double, and Milligan extended their lead to 6-0 after three innings with RBI singles from Blake Buck (Maryville, Tenn.) and Sam Tarleton (Chuckey, Tenn.).

The Cavaliers scored four runs in the top of the fourth. However, the Buffaloes answered with runs from Brett Mercurio (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Kirk, and Buck extended the Milligan advantage to 10-4 with a two-run RBI double. Tyree Jefferies (Jackson, Tenn.) scored the final run of the game in the home side of the sixth inning to secure the win for Milligan.

Justin Johnson (Black Mountain, N.C.) picked up the win in his first start of the season. In five innings of work, Johnson allowed three earned runs on seven hits.

At the plate, Mercurio was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Blake Buck was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Tarleton finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs. McPherson was 2-for-5.

The Buffaloes jumped out early in the second game as they took a 4-0 lead into the second inning. Nathan Millsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) drove in two runs in the bottom of the second with a RBI single, and Milligan scored two runs off a McPherson double to take a 9-0 lead after three innings of play. The Cavaliers broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, but Milligan countered in the home side of the fifth inning as Tarleton scored the game's final run.

Millsap finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs at the plate, while McPherson was 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Hunter Carpenter (Sneedville, Tenn.) was 1-for-1 with a RBI and a triple.

On the mound, Jake Watts (Boone, N.C.) moved to 2-0 on the season. In five innings of work, Watts allowed just one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts

Milligan improves to 7-1 on the season.

The Buffaloes return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20, as they travel to Southern Wesleyan University for a nine-inning contest. Game time in Central, S.C., is set for 3 p.m.
