Milligan baseball falls in season opener

Milligan College, Tenn. (Feb. 6, 2013) --- The Milligan College baseball team was unable to answer two runs in the 12th inning as they fell 7-5 to UVA-Wise on Wednesday afternoon in the 2013 season opener at Anglin Field.
 
   After UVA-Wise took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, Milligan evened the score at 1-1 as Brett Mercurio (West Palm Beach, Fla.) hit a triple to score Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.). The Buffaloes extended their lead with two runs in the home side of the fifth to go up 3-1.
 
   The Cavaliers scored a run in the sixth and the seventh to tie the game at 3-3, and took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth. Milligan answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game. Both teams scored in the ninth to force extra innings.
 
   The Buffaloes got runners on board in the 10th and 11th inning, but they were unable to drive the winning run across the plate. The Cavaliers took the win in the bottom of the 12th with two runs.
 
   On the mound, Ethan Fleenor (Johnson City, Tenn.) got the starting nod. In six innings of work, Fleenor allowed nine hits and recorded six strikeouts. Sean Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) was handed the loss in four innings of work with four strikeouts.
 
   Mercurio led the way at the plate as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Nathan Milsap (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished the game 2-4.
 
   With the loss, the Buffaloes fall to 0-1 to start the season.
 
   Milligan is slated to return to action on Friday, Feb. 8, as they host Johnson University. First pitch in the nine-inning game is set for 6 p.m.
